DANGLING MODIFIERS

A dangling modifier is a word or clause that's not obviously and logically associated with the word or words it modifies  (i.e. is positioned next to).

    Two notes about dangling modifiers:

Unlike a misplaced modifier, a dangling modifier cannot be corrected through simply transferring it to a different place in a sentence.

In maximum circumstances, the dangling modifier appears originally of the sentence, even though it could actually additionally come at the end.

Sometimes the dangling modifier error occurs because the sentence fails to specify anything else to which the modifier can refer.

    Example  1

This sentence does no longer specify who's having a look toward the west.  In reality, there may be not anything in any respect in the sentence to which the enhancing word having a look towards the west can logically refer.  Since the modifier, looking towards the west,  is sitting subsequent to the funnel shaped cloud, the sentence suggests that the cloud is doing the having a look.

Example 2

This sentence means that my mother enrolled in scientific when she was once 9 years outdated!

At other instances the dangling modifier is positioned next to the fallacious noun or noun exchange.

    Example 1

Because of the position of walking to the flicks, this sentence means that the cloudburst is strolling to the movies even though a conceivable walker - Jim - is mentioned later.

    Example 2

Since having been mounted the night time before is placed subsequent to Priscilla, the sentence implies that Priscilla was fastened the evening earlier than.

As the above examples show, dangling modifiers result in faulty and from time to time ludicrous statements.

How to correct dangling modifiers

Dangling modifiers may be corrected in two common tactics.

Correction Method #1

Leave the modifier as it is.

Change the primary part of the sentence in order that it begins with the time period in truth modified.

This change will put the modifier subsequent to the time period it modifies.

 Thus, this dangling modifier

  could also be corrected to

Now the sentence implies that I was taking a look toward the west.

Using the similar way, this dangling modifier

  is also corrected to

Now the sentence signifies that Jim used to be soaking wet via the cloudburst.
